Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is a genetic condition. It happens when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21 (so three instead of two). This extra genetic material affects how the body and brain develop.
It’s not an illness, and it’s not caused by anything the parents did. People with Down syndrome are born with it and have it for life. This doesn’t stop many individuals from having a rewarding and fulfilling life and we are here to help this happen!People with Down syndrome learn, think, and process information differently, not “less,” just differently.Common brain-related differences include:
- Intellectual disability (usually mild to moderate)
- Slower processing speed — it may take longer to understand or respond
- Short-term memory challenges, especially with verbal information
- Strong visual learning — many learn better with pictures, demonstrations, and repetition
- Speech and language delays, even when understanding is good
- Good social awareness and emotional understanding — many are empathetic, affectionate, and socially engaged
Important: abilities vary widely. Some people need significant support; others live independently, work jobs, and form relationships.
